This step involves completing an application that formally requests the deactivation and revocation of your current US DOT number, ensuring it is recognized across all relevant DOT and FMCSA services.

  2. File an Out of Business Notification: This is a critical step for businesses ceasing operations. The process is straightforward: select the service, add it to your cart, and proceed to Checkout for payment, certifying that your deactivation is handled correctly and officially.

  3. Method of Submission: The deactivation can be done online or via a paper form submission. Online submissions typically offer a faster processing time and immediate acknowledgment of your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Suspend Your DOT Number?

No. Instead, a DOT number can get involuntarily deactivated. This often happens when a biennial update was not provided to the FMCSA. Or, when a trucking professional fails the new entrant audit. Although you cannot suspend your DOT number, you can deactivate it.

Can I Put My Trucking Authority on Hold?

No, you cannot put your trucking authority on hold or suspend it. Instead, you can revoke your authority through the FMCSA. This concept also applies to your operating authority and MC number.

How Long Does It Take To Reactivate USDOT?

The time-frame varies when reactivating a USDOT number. According to the FMCSA, authority will often become active in about a week. Or, at least, a week after receiving valid payment and the application receipt.

Can Two Companies Use the Same DOT Number?

No. The FMCSA has a policy in place to assign a DOT number to only one person. In fact, you cannot even transfer a

DOT number to another person or business. Once you have a number, it remains assigned forever. This is according to FMCSA policy 49 U.S.C. 13902, 31134 and 49 C.F.R. 390.19T/390.200T.

What Does Inactive Authority Mean?

Having an inactive status means that operating authority has gotten revoked. Thus, it is illegal to continue interstate transportation operations. This applies to brokers, carriers, and freight forwarders.
